Best Active Collegiate NHL Stars
Over the last decade, NHL fans have seen a shift in recruiting process, as more and more teams around the league are looking to draft college players as opposed to stars of the major junior leagues. For instance, in 2006 Erik Johnson now of the Colorado Avalanche was drafted out of the University of Minnesota by the St. Louis Blues as the first overall pick in that year's draft. In fact in 2006 alone three of the top five draft picks came from collegiate hockey. With that in mind, here are two of the best active players to make an impact in the NHL after playing in the NCAA.- Andy McDonald F St. Louis Blues - Andy McDonald played for Colgate University, a school that is known more of a hockey powerhouse than a basketball one. McDonald has played in over 600 NHL games, for the Anaheim Ducks and currently the St. Louis Blues. McDonald enjoyed his best seasons with the Ducks, during the 2005 - 06 and 2006 - 07 seasons in which he had 85 and 78 points respectively.
What's more, during the 2006 - 07 season, McDonald was an integral part to the eventual Stanley Cup run in which the Ducks captured their first title in franchise history. Since being shipped to St. Louis McDonald has been one of the many catalysts to the team's success. Despite missing significant time with injury, McDonald has 27 points in 33 games this year good enough for third in team scoring.
- Ryan Miller G Buffalo Sabres - Ryan Miller attended Michigan State for four years, prior to being drafted by the Buffalo Sabres. He's been the Sabres starting netminder since the 2005 - 06 seasons. Thus far in his career, Miller has compiled a record of 212 - 122 - 1 - 38 with a 914 save percentage and 2.59 goals against average.
Last season was a dream season for the big goalie from Michigan State, as he won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie. Further, he was an overtime goal against away from winning Gold at the Olympics for Team USA.
